Lucky Cat Studio was founded in August 2018, three years after Bob Barry, a noted ceramicist, artist, and professor at Long Island University, moved to upstate New York from Brooklyn. Barry’s work reflects the beaches in Southern California and the woods behind his home in the Hudson Valley.
In California, he surfed every day and learned to listen to the ocean’s rhythm. On the beach, he’d pick up flotsam, create a history for it, and incorporate it into his ceramics.
He continues that dialogue today as he walks the trails near his studio in High Falls. His Summer 2018 pieces are smoked after kiln firing, a technique Barry picked up from Native Americans while growing up in Southern California.
Although Barry had wanted to try the smoking technique for years, he wasn’t able to explore it fully until moving from Brooklyn to his secluded studio in High Falls.
Now, Barry says his pieces are “starting to resemble the woods around my house.”

Lucky Cat Studio Artist & Founder Bob Barry exhibits his sculpture, pottery and photography internationally.
He has had artist residencies in Tokoname Japan, Vallauris France, Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, Woodstock New York and at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Maine.
As a tenured professor and Chair of the Visual Arts at LIU Brooklyn, Barry teaches advanced pottery and sculpture, Honors classes and conducts specialized Raku and wood firing workshops.
